On September 20, 2014, a press release from Holy See announced Pope Francis’ decision, on August 27, to create a special study commission for the reform of canonical matrimonial trials. Bishop Pio Vito Pinto, dean of the Rota Romana Tribunal, will preside over this commission. The Rota Romana Tribunal is the court of appeals that deals especially with marriage annulment requests. This commission’s work will begin as soon as possible, and its goal will be to simplify the trial procedure, making it suppler while respecting the principle of the indissolubility of marriage. – This decision was made public three weeks before the opening of the extraordinary Synod on the Family. Roman observers point out that Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke, Prefect of the Supreme Court of the Apostolic Signature, and opposed to the reforms suggested by Cardinal Walter Kasper, is not a part of this commission.
